Children and UV Protection
Make Outdoor Fun Safer
In their eagerness to have fun, kids often play outdoors without adequate UV protection. Quality sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking contact lenses can help.
Help patients develop good habits early
UV radiation is a preventable threat to eye health. Because damage to the eyes from prolonged UV exposure is cumulative and long-term, early protection is vital.
- UV light can damage the cornea, lens and retina of the eye.
- The lens and retina have limited capability to repair UV damage.
- Research indicates a link between UV exposure and cataractsa,b as well as other serious eye problems.
New research findings show that maximum ocular UV radiation occurs at unlikely times of the day.c
- During spring, summer and fall, ocular UV exposure is greater during early morning and late afternoon.
- Exposure is nearly double that of mid-morning and early afternoon.
Informing your young patients and their parents about the importance of UV protection today can help alleviate serious eye problems later in life.
