"I continue to believe that contact lenses are a viable alternative for kids."

Vaulting to Success

My name is Mary Lou French, and I’m a pediatric optometrist in Orland Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. I’ve been fitting children and teens with contact lenses for more than 30 years in my practice, called Children’s Eyecare.

I love working with children — so much that I went back to school for a master’s in early childhood development about 15 years ago. I wanted to learn more about what makes children the unique individuals they are. I believe that experience, plus having children of my own, has made it easier for me to relate to my patients. And, I hope, for them to relate to me.

One of my favorite success stories involves a young patient who is an athlete. Ashley was 8 years old at the time, a gymnast — and myopic. Ashley’s eyeglasses would fly off almost every time she performed on the vault, posing a safety issue. Without her glasses, Ashley couldn’t see the vault, so going without them wasn’t an option. After I fit her with contact lenses, she could see the vault clearly and execute her routines without the problems her glasses were causing her. Today, Ashley is a high school senior and talking with colleges about gymnastics scholarships.
