(April 20, 2010) – While 85 percent of Americans recognize that ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage their eyes, only 65 percent wear sunglasses as protection, and even fewer (39 percent) make sure their children wear sunglasses. New research suggests that a novel silicone hydrogel material could help keep contact lens wearers from discarding their contacts due to discomfort caused by feelings of dryness, the most commonly reported reason people discontinue contact lens wear. Using a controlled clinical model for evaluating dryness, researchers report that patients experienced less discomfort while wearing contact lenses made with senofilcon A (ACUVUE® OASYS™ Brand Contact Lenses) than they did either while wearing no lenses or while wearing their usual contact lenses in a controlled adverse environment.

A contact lens (ACUVUE® OASYS™, VISTAKON®) has received FDA approval for therapeutic use as a bandage lens for certain acute and chronic ocular conditions.
"The wettability, smoothness, flexibility, high [level of] oxygen transmissibility, comfort, and Class I [ultraviolet light]-blocking properties of [the lens] make it an excellent choice for therapeutic use as a bandage lens for a range of conditions," said Sheila Hickson-Curran, Director, Medical Affairs, VISTAKON®.
