THE UV PROBLEM
Ocular UV Overexposure Is a Real Problem

Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR) Is Cumulative and Dangerous
The threat to our eyes from UVR is greater now than ever before. Because of greater lifetime exposure and lack of public awareness of the problem, it is becoming more difficult to maintain patients' ocular health.
More time outdoors
More time outdoors results in more ultraviolet (UV) exposure. In many societies, people have more leisure time and choose to spend it outdoors, increasing their UV doses.
Ozone depletion
Pollution created by man leads to thinning of the ozone. Because the ozone layer is thinning, more UVR penetrates the atmosphere.a
Living longer
Longer life expectancies lead to greater UV exposure. Because we tend to live longer than previous generations, overexposure is more likely.b
Noncompliance
Many people don’t worry about UV protection for their eyes. Ignoring recommendations to use effective UV protection puts patients at increased risk for ocular UV damage.
